Solid or Engineered – Your Ideal Oak Floor Awaits
As an interior finish, oak flooring has maintained its position as a preferred flooring option, adding value and personal character to a home. Oak flooring is available as a solid or engineered product.
Solid Oak Flooring
Solid oak flooring is flooring material made out of a single piece of timber, usually cut into a tongue-and-groove profile that is installed to the subfloor by nailing through the tongue on a diagonal into the floor board and into the subfloor below.
Engineered Oak Flooring
Engineered oak is made of a top layer of solid oak wood and bonded to an engineered board made up of multiple layers of plywood. Product warranties on engineered flooring products can range from 10-25 years. Engineered oak flooring comes with a range of edge profiles, being square edge, bevelled and micro-bevelled.
FAQ:
Is engineered flooring the same as laminate flooring?
Some think engineered flooring is fake timber.
This is incorrect.
Engineered flooring is made with 3-6mm of solid wood on top of an engineered ply base giving you a profile of between 13-21mm.
Laminate flooring on the other hand is a photographic image of oak on top of a backing eg. MDF or other products.
Choose The Right Flooring For Your Home
Select The Grade You Want
Timber grading can really add to the character and personality of your timber flooring. Rustic and Farmhouse grades feature knots, band-sawn cuts if requested to achieve a lived in feel. Some prefer cleaner boards that don't feature as many knots.
Whatever look you want to achieve, ask us for help with selecting a grade to meet your project requirements.

2. Select The Finish You Want
There are a number of oil and polyurethane finishes available. From natural tones to coastal whitewashes, and from warm browns to cool greys and black tones, the colours are endless!
Oil Finish
Oil colours are vast and allow the floor to look better over time with a regular floor cleaning and maintenance routine. Some oil finishes on the market are low VOC or VOC free, making them safe for pets and children.

Polyurethane Finish
Choosing a polyurethane finish suits some home owners more than oils.
This is a personal preference depending on how much cleaning you're willing to do to care for your floor. Again, a wide range of colours. Plus, the choice of gloss, semi gloss, matte, extra matte finishes.
